Between 1996 and 2001 I worked for a small independent British TV production company based in Moscow. I frequently travelled with foreign correspondents and producers across the length and breadth of Russia and the former Soviet republics filming and editing countless news stories, feature pieces, long-form documentaries and the occasional corporate film.
Long before the term 'blog' or weblog was adopted into the language, long before youtube was even thought possible, I wrote detailed diaries of my expeditions into faraway places with strange-sounding names and emailed them to family and friends. I also edited my own versions of the footage I had shot and mailed VHS copies of these to my family and friends across the world so they could all share this weird and wonderful part of the planet that I was experiencing.
I am still in the process of adding these travel stories to my blog here.
Eventually these edits became known as my 'strange journeys'. They are not in-depth documentaries or news stories; they are my personal visions of unusual trips and experiences. Enjoy.
Best watched with straight vodka shots, as the Russkies drink it - not mixed with carbonated sugar-water!
